Q1 - Who and what is the Association?

Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (The Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters) is the professional body for English/Welsh translators. Its members are either full time or part time translators or individuals for whom translation forms a substantial part of their work.

The main aims of the Association are to:

• Extend and strengthen its accreditation and benchmarking procedures to maintain professional standards in English/Welsh translation
• Represent the majority of English/Welsh translators
• Provide professional support to translators
• Represent the translation profession in areas of influence
• Develop the industry by acting as a consultative body

Q2 - Why join?

• The Welsh Language Board and the National Assembly recognise the Association as the appropriate body for the discussion of English/Welsh translation issues.
• The Welsh Language Board refers those wishing to commission commercial translators to the Association's list of members.
• Professional Indemnity Insurance: McParland Finn Ltd (MFL) Insurance Brokers offer a competitive Professional Indemnity Insurance package specially tailored for Full and Basic Members of the Association.
• From time to time Members receive discounted rates and special offers by arrangement with various organisations/shops.
• Members receive discounted rates on workshops and conferences organised by the Association. Members also receive a 20% discount on examinations/assessment fees.

Q3 - What is the difference between Full, Basic and Interpreting Membership?

Full

Standard – A translator who produces work to a fully professional standard requiring no supervision or editing.

Application Criteria - Candidates must have three years of experience of translating full time (or equivalent experience of translating part-time).

Basic

Standard – A translator working under the supervision of an experienced translator.
 
Application criteria - A candidate must have one year’s experience of professional translation.

Interpreting

Standard – An interpreter who works to a fully professional standard and is able to interpret fluently and correctly from Welsh to English.

Application Criteria - Candidates must have 200 hours of experience of attending meetings as an interpreter.

Q5 - What is a ‘Friend of the Association’?

Those interested in translation may join as a Friend. This is an ideal way to learn more about professional translation in Wales as you will receive information about all the Association's activities and current discussions.

Q6 - Can a company join?

The Association is in the process of inviting private translation companies who have been working in English/Welsh translation and interpretation for at least three years to apply for Corporate Membership. For further information go to the Corporate Membership page.
 
Q7 - Membership fee (Annual)?

The current membership fee is £130 for Full Members, £120 for Basic Members, £130 for Interpreting Members.

Q8 - Who marks the work?

Each script/test will be marked by two members of the Translation Board/Interpreting Board. If the examiners are unable to agree, the scripts will be referred to a Chief Examiner, who will be another member of the Translation Board/Interpreting Board.
