Introduction

The latest reports of the National Assembly for Wales, Iaith Pawb and Our Language: Its Future emphasize the importance of increasing the use of the Welsh language within the community. This will inevitably lead to a growing demand for simultaneous translation at bilingual meetings. Once people realize the practical and political advantages that these services will bring to the wider public, more and more institutions and businesses will consider holding their meetings bilingually with the help of simultaneous translation equipment and translators.

Various institutions and associations already hire out translation equipment to businesses, institutions and different groups, and sometimes they also provide a translator. The Mentrau Iaith and other groups working within the community distinguish, in terms of their hiring conditions and charges, between commercial use (hiring the equipment to fairly large institutions and companies) and community and voluntary use (hiring to voluntary and non-profit making organizations).

This database is intended to facilitate the task of organizing a bilingual meeting. Its aim is to provide information and answer those important questions that arise when arranging such a meeting:

  • Where can I hire the equipment?
  • What will be the cost of hiring equipment and a translator’s services?
  • Are there special terms for voluntary organizations and meetings within the community?
  • What is the role of the translator and the chairperson in a bilingual meeting? (See Hear and Now)
  • What are the various simultaneous translation systems available at present? (See Hear and Now)

We as an Association cannot guarantee the condition and standard of the equipment listed in this database, but the main aim is to provide a rough guide to what is available and where. You will always need to discuss details and conditions with the provider of the equipment and the translator.

We would appreciate any additional information, which could be included in the database or amendments to the present information. To do so, please contact us in the office.
