Full Membership
Standard of Full Membership (Text)
This is equivalent to full professional membership where no supervision is required.
Candidates are expected to be able to translate fluently and accurately, to write in a variety of styles and registers as required and to be able to handle abstract or technical language. They are also expected to possess a clear understanding of the cultural background of both languages. Once they have completed and revised their translations, there should be no need for any editing or corrections.
Any translator with three years full time experience of working as a translator, or with equivalent part-time experience, may apply for Full Membership.
Criteria for Basic Membership
Applicants for Full Membership of the Association are required to sit the Association's examination(s). Two examinations, each of 2 hours (120 minutes) duration, are held within an examination session:
Paper One – Translation from English into Welsh
Paper Two – Translation from Welsh into English
The standard of any examination for Full Membership set by the Association will ensure that the candidate has achieved an appropriate professional level in terms of meaning, register, syntax and accuracy. Examples of previous Examination Papers for Full Membership can be found here.
Candidates are not required to achieve the pass mark in both papers before being accepted into membership of the Association. Candidates may choose to translate into either English or Wales, or both. If the candidate achieves the required pass mark and is accepted into membership of the Association, the Directory will indicate into which language the candidate is qualified to translate.
